Starbucks to Add Tipping to Mobile Payments App

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

USA based coffee shop chain, Starbucks is planning an update to its mobile payments app that will permit the addition of tips for staff when customers make payments.

At the moment, the mobile app only permits payment for drinks and food at the prices advertised, and if a customer wants to tip the employee, that has to be done with cash.

In the USA, tipping for service is a common habit and often makes up a significant portion of the employee's wages.

The lack of a tipping option in the mobile payments app has therefore been seen as a weakness, not just by customers, but also discouraged employees from promoting the app option to customers.

Starbucks plans to roll out the payments app shortly, with tipping launched in the USA, and possibly later in other countries.
