Nigerian Networks Pay Fine For Missing Quality of Service Standards

Three of Nigeria's mobile networks have met the deadline to pay fines imposed on them by the regulator for missing regulatory requirements for quality of service.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed that it received the payment of N647.5 million (USD3.88 million) at the end of business on Friday.
Last month, Airtel and MTN had been fined N185 million each, while Globacom was fined N277.5 million. They had until the 7th March to pay the fines.
The three networks have also been banned from signing up any new customers during the month of March.
The network operators are vocal in critising the regulator for its actions, as they argue that most of the quality problems stem from difficulties in deploying base stations due to local planning restrictions and security problems.
They also said that the new subscribers ban will do more to hurt the small businesses that sell the SIM cards than it would hurt the mobile networks.
