Bidders for a memorably phone number in a charity auction being organised by UAE's Etisalat are being warned that they wont own the phone number after they "buy" it.

The telecoms regulator said that while it supports the aims of the auction, which is to raise money for the Khalifa Foundation, it had to warn that customers do not own phone numbers.

The TRA noted that phone numbers are managed by the regulator, and could be changed at some time in the future if necessary. It also warned that customers cannot sell on their phone numbers as a tradable commodity.

In essence, as in most countries, customers simply have a lease to use the phone number.

Part of the auction revenue will be used to support Khalifa Foundation programs while another part will be used to support Etisalat's CSR projects
