Ukraine Telecoms Affected by Cyber Attacks from Crimea

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

Ukraine's security services chief says that the country's telecommunications have come under attack from equipment being installed in Crimea by the Russian military.

Politicians mobile phones have been especially targetted, Valentyn Nalivaichenko, head of Ukraine's SBU security service said.

"I confirm that an IP-telephonic attack is under way on mobile phones of members of Ukrainian parliament for the second day in row." he stated.

He suggested that illegal equipment has been detected at the local telco, Ukrtelecom at some of its facilities in Crimea. Ukrtelecom has already confirmed that armed men raided its facilities in Crimea on Friday.

He added that the security services are working hard to restore the security of the telecommunications network.

Other cyber-attacks have also been reported, with internet connections to Crimea largely cut-off and numerous government websites targetted by hackers with denial of service attacks to take them off-line.

Tracing the source of such attacks will be almost impossible, and while almost certainly Russian in origin, it will be exceptionally difficult to prove they are anything more than wildly patriotic Russians rather than a government directed campaign.

Both Estonia in 2007 and Georgia in 2008 suffered similar attacks when their governments took actions deemed less than inviting to their Russian neighbour.
