Taiwan Mobile says that it plans to deploy 8 000 10 000 LTE capable base stations by the end of next year.
The company's President, James Jeng said that the deployment would be sufficient to cover around 90 percent of the population. He also confirmed that the company is considering increasing the level of handset subsidies to attract customers.
Taiwan Mobile is one of six to have been awarded 4G licenses in the 700Mhz spectrum bands. Jeng warned that could be too many, with 3 or 4 being ideal for a 4G operator to be profitable.
The country has often struggled with too many small operators launching after winning radio spectrum, and then not developing their networks.
Taiwan Mobile had previously called on the government to scrap the old WiMAX licenses to promote LTE developments.
