Qualcomm and Deutsche Telekom are to collaborate on the first LTE Direct operator trial in Germany.
LTE Direct is expected to be an operator owned platform that enables the next generation of proximity based services. This platform operates in licensed spectrum and relies on the LTE physical layer. LTE Direct is a device-to-device discovery platform that enables the continuous discovery of thousands of devices and services while maintaining privacy and battery efficiency.
Using LTE allows always-on and autonomous discovery, which is scalable and provides a universal framework for discovering and connecting proximate peers without todays closed user groups.
"The LTE Direct trial will be an excellent opportunity for the application developer community to demonstrate a number of unique applications and services working on LTE Direct," stated Matt Grob, Qualcomm's Chief Technology Officer.
The upcoming trial would be enabled by trial devices from Qualcomm, Samsung, and LTE Direct enabled base stations. Standardization of LTE Direct in a 3GPP Release 12 is expected to be completed at the end of this year.
