European Cellular Networks to Be Dominated by Data Services
The Strategis Group has released new research showing a dramatic shift in wireless services in Europe. New forecasts show the evolving wireless infrastructure in Europe is on track to primarily carry data, with the total number of data switches installed throughout the 39 European markets profiled growing from 34 in mid-2000 to a peak of 2,111 in mid-2005. By contrast, the number of active voice switches in these markets is projected to peak at 553 in 2003.
The Strategis Group forecasts show that the market share in Europe for GPRS infrastructure provision, by the actual number of contracts signed, is lead by Ericsson and Nokia, with 33.5% and 25.4% market share, respectively. Motorola and Siemens also have a significant presence, with 12% and 7.5% market share, respectively.
"We are following these developments closely, and we anticipate accelerated infrastructure deployment as the long-awaited arrival of next- generation services and devices raises the bar for infrastructure providers," says Zoe Slennett, a senior analyst with The Strategis Group.
