Bangladesh's mobile network operators are to be granted access to the electoral database to assist them in proving the identity of SIM card buyers.
The Chairman of the telecoms regulator, the BTRC said that the Election Commission had approved the request granting access to its database.
The networks wont have direct access to the electoral database, but will pass requests through the telecoms regulator so that the BTRC can monitor the requests for its own audits.
The mobile networks are required to verify the identity of customers before activating a phone line, but there have been complaints that it can be difficult to validate IDs reliably due to a lack of 3rd party database.
"We are optimistic that the operators would get access to the EC's database from next month to verify the subscriber's information before activating new connections," the Chairman, Sunil Kanti Bose said.
