Qatar's telecoms regulator ictQATAR says that it has finalized the new radio spectrum licensing framework following a public consultation process that took last last August.
In order to switch over the new regime though, all existing wireless spectrum licenses will be cancelled on the 30th June 2014, and replacements issued on the 1st July 2014.
The regulator said that the new spectrum licensing framework was developed with the aim of having more flexibility in using licensing tools for regulating the spectrum use, for ensuring efficient use of radio spectrum, to reduce the administrative burden, and to increase transparency regarding the regulatory framework.
The mapping of most of the current Radio Station Licenses to the newly developed respective Radio Spectrum Licenses will be carried out by default with additional terms and conditions applicable as per the new spectrum licensing framework.
The regulator warned that following the changes, there may be changes in the spectrum fees for which Spectrum Affairs Department should be consulted. However, there are a few exceptions where licensees will have more than one licensing option to choose from.
Licensees can submit applications for area or block assigned Spectrum Licenses and any other queries until Feb. 27. ictQATAR is to respond to queries requested by licensees on March 20 and will issue new Spectrum Licenses on June 26, 2014.
