Nigerian Networks Ordered to Suspend SMS Lotteries
Published on: 3rd Feb 2014
Nigeria's mobile networks have been ordered to suspend any SMS based lotteries they are running lest they compete against a government organised lottery for later this year.
The National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) issued the temporary ban to come into immediate effect, although the duration of the ban has not been set.
The Federal Government plans to conduct its own Centenary Games Lottery over the mobile networks as part of the celebrations to mark the country's 100 years of the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914.
The NLRC said that the centenary lottery will run on MTN, Airtel, Globacom, Etisalat and Visafone networks.
