UK based EE has announced plans to open 50 new retail stores this year, although it has warned of an unspecified number of store closures in some parts of the country where there is duplication.

The company inherited the separate and competing retail portfolios from Orange and T-Mobile in the UK, and in some places, just one of them will be rebranded as EE stores, leaving the other to be closed. Staff will be moved to the adjacent store, and affected store managers will be re-deployed where possible.

Deirdre Burns, Retail Director at EE, said: "We've already determined the new locations where we will develop and grow and now have plans for 50 EE stores to open in the areas, including a number of franchise outlets, over the next 12 months creating hundreds of new jobs."

The company confirmed the expansion of the existing franchise programme to a total of 100 stores.
