Thai Network Increases Investment in 3G Rollout

Thailand's AIS says that it will increase its investment in its 3G network to Bt90 billion (US$2.7 billion) from the previously announced Bt70 billion during 2013 2015.
The increase in 3G investment comes after the company failed to secure a digital TV channel license when bidding rose beyond the price it was willing to pay. As the firm no longer has the investment need for the television service, it can redirect the resources towards its mobile network.
The mobile network's 3G coverage currently reaches 70 percent of the population, and the target is to provide 90 percent coverage by 2014 and 97 percent by 2015.
NSN was the supplier for some, or maybe all, of the currently 3G network, based on a statement from the company last April.
AIS also plans to bid in the 1800Mhz spectrum auction that is due this coming September.
