Zambia's government has agreed to extend the deadline for SIM Card registration after facing the potential for half the country's mobile phones to be cut off.
The deadline was die to have expired at the end of last month, but has been extended to the end of January.
The move comes after Minister of Communications and Transport, Yamfwa Mukanga repeatedly denied that he would permit any further extensions.
He however said that he had been impressed with recent efforts by the telecoms regulator and the mobile networks to boost SIM Card registration.
A consumer rights group, ZACA is concerned that a one-month extension may not be enough considering that nearly 5 million SIM Cards need registering. They called for the deadline to be pushed further back to the end of February at least.
