Fitness clothing and accessories company Nike is reportedly working on a smartwatch of its own to fend off possible challenges from other electronics vendors next year.
Citing sources in Taiwan's supply chain, DigiTimes reported that Nike plans to launch a new smartwatch in the first half of 2014 and that early production runs are already taking place at assembly plants.
Nike has a market share of around 30% in the global sports wear market, but could face a challenge in the wearable electronics market from smartphone vendors developing smartwatches that include fitness tools.
There are however contrary suggestions that the new product could be just an updated version of its existing Fuelband, a simple wrist strap that logs fitness data for downloading to a server
Nike's rival, Adidas recently released its own smartwatch that supports connectivity with smartphones running Android, iOS or Windows Phone.
