EU Wont Comment on E-Plus/O2 Merger Until Formally Notified

The European Commission has no concerns about the proposed merger between Germany's Telefonica O2 and R Plus, but only because it hasn't looked at it yet.
"The O2/E-Plus deal has not yet been notified to the European Commission for review," Antoine Colombani, a spokesman for EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, said in an e-mailed statement.
The EU issued the statement after Almunia told reporters in Vilnius, Lithuania, earlier today that he has "no concerns" about the deal.
The EU said that "We have no concerns at this stage because we have not yet investigated."
Now that KPN's shareholders have approved the sale of their stake to Telefonica Germany, the deal has to be passed to competition authorities to decide if there are any issues.
It is not expected to cause significant problems, as EU representatives have been on record in recent months advocating some degree of consolidation in the European markets, so long as competition is not impared.
