Pan Caribbean mobile network, Digicel is reportedly considering making an offer to buy the Dominican Republic operations of Orange, which have been put for sale by the French parent company.
Orange Dominicana, which has about three million subscribers and annual revenues of EUR450 million is estimated to be worth around EUR1 billion (US$1.35 billion).
Orange has about 38 percent of the local mobile market, with America Movil's Claro taking just over half.
Five companies are thought to be submitting bids to buy the company, although only Digicel has been named as a possible bidder so far.
Another likely bidder is Cable & Wireless, which operates mobile networks in the region under the Lime brand name.
