Hungary's telecoms regulator has extended all the mobile network operator licenses so that they expire at the same date.

Vodafone, Telenor and Magyar Telecom have had their various licenses all extended until April 2022, although they will have to make payments of US$436 million for the extensions.

The licenses had been due to expire on different dates in October 2014.

The regulator also confirmed that it will offer an auction for the 900Mhz spectrum that was left unsold after it was ordered to cancel a tender earlier this year. The auction will be open to the incumbents, but will be designed to encourage a new entrant into the market.

The government had previously tried to set up a state-owned mobile network until the courts blocked the decision.

The new spectrum plans also envisage auctions of 800Mhz spectrum at an unspecified date.
