Apple Testing 6-Inch Screen for Next iPhone

Although Apple is due to unveil two new iPhones next week, it is said to already be working on their replacements.

In a move that looks like it is following Samsung into filling multiple markets, the company is said to be testing a range of new screen sizes ranging from 4.8 inches to as large as 6-inches for its new smartphones.

Citing people familiar with the tests, the Wall Street Journal however noted that Apple often tests different devices and configurations before choosing a course -- so the tests could mean just one new device launching, not a whole range of them.

Apple does has form with multiple device sizes though -- as exemplified in its iPad tablet range. The mystery has been why it was reluctant to follow that path with the iPhone.

Component suppliers however say that Apple already began testing larger screens for iPhones in recent months. Apple has been particularly interested in recent tests for a 4.8-inch screen, these people say.

The two iPhones being shown off next week are expected to stick the Apple's historic 4-inch screensize.

In slightly related news, a since deleted message from China Telecom accidentally confirmed that the new iPhones will, as widely expected, be called the 5S and the 5C.
