Future Smartphones to Rival Games Consoles

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

The next generation of smartphones could rival modern games consoles in terms of graphics capabilities according to a senior EA Games executive.

However, the games themselves will have to still be very different due to the use of touchscreens as the primary control mechanism instead of handheld controls of movement sensors.

"In the near future, the next wave of tablets and phones will have nearly Xbox 360 or PS3 capabilities in terms of graphics," Gibeau told IGN. "Some of our engine technology that used to be console-specific now can, with modifications, be able to power games on tablets and on phones in the near future. We're just getting ready for that."

He didn't say how long it would be before console grade games would come to mobile devices. However, there is also the question as to whether the snacking consumption model for mobile content would also support long-play games that are more common place on consoles.
