The Canadian financial services company Fairfax Financial Holdings is reported to be in the early stages of preparing a bid to buy the local mobile network Wind Mobile which has been put up for sale by its owner VimpelCom.

Although the financial services company has yet to submit a formal bid, sources told the Globe and Mail newspaper that it is engaged in early-stage talks and is contemplating making an offer. A potential bid could be as part of a consortium with other companies.

Wind is said to be valued quite widely at between $500 million and $1 billion.

Other bidders for the company include a combination of Wind's former CEO Anthony Lacavera with Egypt's Naguib Sawiris.

Another company, Fongo made a laughable offer to buy the firm for a dollar.
