The mobile satellite operator Thuraya has developed a "SatSleve" that converts an Apple iPhone into a handheld satellite phone.
Only slightly larger than the iPhone itself, the adaptor provides users with the ability to turn their iPhone into a satellite phone that allows them to have connectivity beyond the coverage of traditional terrestrial networks.
Samer Halawi, Chief Executive Officer of Thuraya, said: The launch of Thuraya SatSleeve represents a major milestone and a game-changing innovation in the satellite industry. This is the first consumer friendly mobile satellite phone ever launched, which dramatically increases the reach to satellite telephony for enterprise, government, and everyday consumers alike."
The SatSleeve also comes equipped with an Emergency Call button, enabling users to make a phone call to one predefined number even without the iPhone being connected.
The SatSleeve's standby time is up to 48 hours and the talk time is up to four hours.
