China's Lenovo Mulls Takeover Bid for BlackBerry Manufacturer

Published on:

China's Lenovo has again expressed an interest in a possible bid for the BlackBerry smartphone manufacturer, sending the Canadian company's shareprice up by 10 percent.

Lenovo Group's CEO told the French newspaper, Les Echos that a deal with the company "could possibly make sense, but first I need to analyze the market and understand what exactly the importance of this company is."

The CEOs remarks follow on from comments made by his Financial Officer earlier this year about a possible bid to buy the company, although these were played down at the time.

Any bid by the Chinese firm would have to also be approved by the Canadian government which vets all major takeover bids by foreign companies.

BlackBerry will announce its quarterly results on the 28th March, and is expected to also announce initial sales figures for its latest smartphones which will have just gone on sale in the USA.
