Rwandan Government to Deploy Wholesale LTE Network

Published on:

The Rwandan government -- through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) -- and South Korea's KT Corp have announced a joint venture to deploy a LTE network in the country.

The aim of the network is not to sell direct to the public, but to provide wholesale capacity to the existing mobile networks, and future MVNs.

The government statement said that deployment of the new infrastructure will add to the fiber optic infrastructure already deployed by the Government of Rwanda, to achieve maximum broadband connectivity for all communities in the country.

Under the intended public-private partnership, the government will extend investment incentives while KT will be responsible for the deployment of the network and the operation of the company including transfer of technical and commercial know-how.

The Head of the ICT department at the Rwanda Development Board, Patrick Nyirishema said, "This moment marks a significant milestone in our long standing commercial relationship with KT Corporation. KT has been our partner in the deployment of Rwanda's extensive fibre optic network and the early form of high speed mobile broadband services. We now intend to extend this important relationship by working together to bring the most advanced form of broadband connectivity to Rwanda and to share our success with other African countries."

Beyond this MoU, KT and the Government of Rwanda intend to collaborate towards establishing a complementary Joint Venture targeted at specific areas of Systems Integration (SI) and Information Technology (IT), capable of triggering growth of SME businesses within the sector.
