SoftBank Tests Balloon Based Emergency Base Station

Published on:

Japan's SoftBank Mobile says that it has tested an emergency relay system that uses a balloon and a satellite to restore mobile phone coverage in areas affected by natural disasters.

The company tested the emergency communications balloon in Aichi Prefecture and aims to deploy 10 of the units across the country by the end of the month.

The balloon based communications device was developed following the earthquake and tsunami March 2011 that left the communications networks struggling to cope. The balloon is tethered to a vehicle-mounted relay station when deployed.

The floating base stations are expected to be able to offer coverage for around 3km from their anchor point.
