AIS Brings Forward 3G Network Launch Date

Thailand's AIS has confirmed that it will launch its new 2.1Ghz based 3G service in April, a month ahead of its original plans.
The decision to bring forward its commercial launch is seen as a reaction to the announcement by rival network, True Move that it would also launch a small LTE service in April.
"We need to speed up our 3G service roll-out with a nationwide network to reduce possible setbacks," said Wichian Mektrakarn, AIS's chief executive, said AIS plans to have 20,000 3G base stations on the 2.1-GHz bandwidth.
Both AIS and True Move already offer 3G services, but only by refarming its existing 900Mhz service and is facing network congestion problems now due to a lack of capacity. The launch of the 2.1Ghz based service is seen as freeing up a huge amount of capacity.
AIS's near-nationwide 3G upgrade will compare to the decision by True Move to launch a 300 base station based LTE network in the capital city.
