Malaysia's Axiata in Talks to Buy Airtel's Sri Lanka Subsidiary

Published on:

Malaysia's Axiata is reportedly in talks with Bharti Airtel to buy the Indian company's subsidiary in Sri Lanka.

Citing sources familiar with the talks, the Business Standard newspaper noted that the move would lead to consolidation in the local market, where Axiatia is already the largest mobile network operator by subscribers.

Dialog Axiata currently holds around 40% of the market, compared to around 8% for Bharti Airtel.

There are currently five mobile networks operating in the smallish country which has been seen as ripe for mergers between the smaller players for some time.
