Jusge Slashes Size of Apple Damages Claim Against Samsung

Apple has suffered a set-back in its ongoing patent battles with Samsung, when a US Judge ordered that the US$1.05 billion damaged award be slashed and a new trial was ordered.
Apple won the billion dollar settlement last year in its largest single victory over Samsung, but the South Korean firm has been contesting it ever since.
"We are pleased that the court decided to strike [$450.5 million] from the jury's award," Samsung said in a statement. "Samsung intends to seek further review as to the remaining award."
The Californian Judge, Lucy Koh who presided over the original trial has also ordered a fresh trial to see how much of the $450 million that has been reclaimed from the original damages should be put back again.
She said in the ruling that the previous jury had incorrectly calculated the size of the damages and that the new trial would be needed to determine the final amount.
The case covers only the scale of the damages -- the original verdict that Samsung infringed Apple patents remains in force.
The Judge has also left open the option for the two companies to negotiate a settlement without going to trial again.
