Confusion Over Rebranding Plans for South Africa's Smallest Mobile Network
Published on:
South Africa's smallest mobile network, 8ta caused confusion over the weekend after it said it would be rebranding to adopt the name of its landline parent, Telkom SA, but later retracted part of the statement.
In the original statement, the mobile network said that its parent company had decided to progressively change the 8ta brand to Telkom Mobile. The company later backtracked, saying that 8ta will not be discontinued, but will be repositioned into specific market segments.
The company maintained its position that the rebranding exercise will "support a more effective business with stronger commercial prospects."
They noted that the 8ta brand has been highly successful in specific segments and that new propositions will be developed and launched under the 8ta brand details of which will communicated in due course.
The company plans a media briefing later to clear up the confusion caused by its own statements.
The South African government is the controlling shareholder in Telkom. The rebranding move also seems to kill off rumours that the landline operator was looking to sell the mobile subsidiary.
