Huawei Drops Kenyan Corruption Lawsuit

Published on:

Huawei has cancelled a lawsuit it was filing in Kenya claiming corruption by rival Chinese vendor, ZTE in a local contract.

Huawei claimed that the police and security officials had inflated the tender which was for police communication systems by at least Sh8 billion in order to take bribes.

Huawei said that it withdrew the lawsuit after the tender was cancelled by the Head of Public Service and secretary to the Cabinet Francis Kimemia. An investigation has been launched into the tender, which was already controversial for being limited to only Chinese suppliers.

It has been claimed that the tender which was awarded at a value of Sh18 billion (US$210 million) was nearly double the real cost that such services should have cost.

The committee that awarded the tender maintains that Huawei failed to meet the required specifications.
