Nigerian Networks Fined for Breaching Marketing Ban

Published on:

Nigeria's four largest mobile networks have been fined by the telecoms regulator for breaching a ban on running promotions and lotteries for their customers.

The four networks were ordered to stop offering time-limited promotions as they encouraged higher than average use of the networks as the offer deadline approached - and increased problems with network congestion.

MTN is to pay N10 million on account of five promotions at N2 million for each promotion while Etisalat is to pay N6 million for three promotions in its network. Airtel is to pay N4 million for running two promotions against the ban while Globacom will pay N2 million for one promotion.

Collectively, they are to pay N22 million (US$137,000) to the regulator, within seven days.

The networks will also be fined an additional N1 million per day that the promotions continue to run.
