The Afghanistan Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA) February 26 warned telecom companies to identify illegal and unregistered SIM cards within two weeks or otherwise face strict legal action, ATRA Vice Chairman Eng. Khair Mohammad Faizi said.

Authorities will seize SIM cards issued without proper identification and will close the offending franchises, Faizi said. Most such companies have ignored Ministry of Communication and Information Technology regulations while issuing SIM cards that terrorists and other criminals use, he said.

As part of an on-going crackdown, authorities have shut down three telecom franchises for selling unregistered SIM cards, seized 300 SIM cards and made three arrests in Kabul, the ATRA said.
