New Zealand Networks to Work on Sharing Stolen Handset Database

Published on:

New Zealand's three mobile networks have agreed to collaborate on plans to share their databases of stolen handsets.

Currently, each network blocks stolen handsets reported by their own customers, but the stolen phone can still be used on the other two mobile networks.

The NZ Telecoms Forum (TCF) says that it has now formed a working party to pick up on work already begun by Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees to find a solution to sharing data about blocked devices.

The TCF said that it aims to create a cost effective, prompt and widely (if not universally) adopted method of sharing data on lost or stolen handsets, to reduce fraud and the demand for stolen devices.

The working party will convene in March and is working to have the first stage of this project up and running later this year.
