MTS India to Shut-Down its Network Across Half the Country

Published on:

India's Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (MTS India) has confirmed that it is to close down its mobile networks in ten circles across the country after the Supreme Court rejected its appeal to keep them running.

The affected circles are: Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, North East, Orissa and Punjab.

SSTL has a customer base of over 14 million, out of which less than 15% come from the impacted circles. The company is maintaining its network in the remaining 11 circles, for the time being.

SSTL also confirmed its intention to participate in the spectrum auctions starting from March 11, 2013 in select circles. The government has confirmed that SSTL will be able to set off previous licence costs against the new auction prices. In accordance with the auction guidelines, the new licences will be technologically neutral.

SSTL said that it will provide further details following the completion of the auctions.
