Teenagers Sending Text Message While Asleep

Published on:

Technophobia has a new advocate in the form of Elizabeth Dowdell, nursing professor at Villanova University who is warning of the dangers of teenagers sending text messages while asleep.

Sleep Texting is not a new phenomena, but is nothing more than the usual adaptations of humans to the changing world and is simply a more benign form of sleep walking.

"It's just what you'd think it is, it's texting while asleep," Professor Dowdell told CBS Local, "It's exactly what is sounds like, or really more between that, you know, that area between being asleep and being awake."

"The phone will beep, they'll answer the text," Dowdell says. "They'll either respond in words or gibberish"

She even warns that such messages might be "inappropriate", as if to suggest that teenagers are not capable of such activity when awake.

Dowdell says sleep interruption can lead to obesity, depression, failing grades and more.

Her solution - put the phone on the other side of the bedroom and turn the ringer off at night.
