Indian Court Rejects Appeals Over Cancelled GSM Licenses

Published on:

India's Supreme Court has rejected appeals by mobile networks who lost telecoms licenses in last year's mass cancellation of the controversial 2008 GSM licenses.

The court rejected the appeals for a reexamination of the earlier verdict by Videocon, SSTL (MTS India), Tata Teleservices and Idea Cellular.

The court said that their appeals case had not been made.

"We have gone through the curative petitions and the relevant documents. In our opinion, no case is made out within the parameters indicated in the decision of this Court" the judges wrote.

In a statement, SSTL said that it "believes that it has been unfairly penalised in the February 2, 2012 order by the Supreme Court. While SSTL remains committed to its operations, however, it would be up to the shareholders to decide the go forward strategy of the company."

The court also rejected a separate appeal by the former telecoms Minister, A Raja who is accused of illegally tendering the licenses originally.
