Hewlett-Packard Faces $500 Million Lawsuit Over Insulting Mobile App
Published on:
Hewlett-Packard is facing a half-billion dollar lawsuit from a little known musician who had a two musical hits in the early 1960s.
The musician, Chubby Checker and his lawyers are suing HP and its Palm subsidiary over a smartphone app that was offered for a short time on the Palm apps store, and apparently downloaded just 84 times before being removed last September.
The app, called "The Chubby Checker" is actually a vulgar adult content game that estimates the size of a mans penis. The apps name comes from a cheap slang term for penis, which is "the chubby" - hence, the chubby checker.
The lawsuit claims that the little known app has caused "irreparable damage and harm" to the little known musician, although the lawsuit has ensured that at least both app and musician are significantly more famous now.
Quite how the lawyers were able to calculate that damages worth half a billion dollars had been caused by an app that hardly anyone had heard of until today is not clear in their statement.
Arguably, the lawyers own publicity has done more damage to the singers reputation by raising awareness of the slang alternative meaning for his name.
Chubby Checker had two chart topping hits in 1960 and 1961, and a number of less successful songs up to 1965.
