Facebook Working on Location Tracking App for Smartphones

Published on:

Facebook is working on a new smartphone application that will track a users location as the company seeks to boost its location based services and advertising revenue from them.

Citing two people familiar with the plans, Bloomberg News said that the app would be released around the middle of next month and would also be able to work in the background on a smartphone so as to remain active when other apps are in use.

The app would pitch the company directly into competition with the likes of FourSquare which generate revenues from advertising services that are in close proximity to their app users.

The team developing Facebook's location software is reportedly being led by Peter Deng, a product director who joined from Google in 2007.

Facebook boosted its development team last year when it bought location tracking software vendor, Glancee and the LBS based social network, Gowalla.
