Ethio Telecom to Replace Nokia Equipment in Addis Abeba

Published on:

Ethiopia's state-owned monopoly mobile network is reportedly in talks to strip out its legacy Nokia supplied network in the capital city and replace it with kit supplied by either Huawei or ZTE.

The company's CEO, Bruno Duthoit recently confirmed that network upgrades in the capital city would include LTE services, but probably not before 2015.

The Nokia kit is over a decade old and the company is currently planning network upgrades and coverage expansion using newer kit elsewhere in the country. Replacing the older equipment should reduce maintenance costs for the company.

Abdurahim Ahmed, head of Public Relations with Ethio Telecom told the local business daily that the company aims to double its subscriber base to 40 million as part of the network upgrades.
