Vodafone India Expresses Concerns About Radio Spectrum Allocation Delay

Published on:

Vodafone India has complained that radio spectrum it paid for in last years radio spectrum auction has still not been formally handed over to the company for use.

The company bid for spectrum in 14 circles, and says that it paid the initial 30 percent deposit last November in expectation of being handed the formal licenses. Under the terms of the licenses, the remaining 70% of the fee is to be paid in instalments.

In a letter to the Department of Telecom (DoT), the company raised concerns about the delay, and suggested that the 20-year licenses should be amended to start from when the spectrum is allocated, not when the fee was originally paid.

The radio spectrum sold was that which had been cancelled by the Supreme Court early last year as part of the investigation into the controversial 2008 GSM license allocations. However, some of the spectrum is still being used by the cancelled network operators as their own fate hasn't been entirely decided yet.

A second tranch of spectrum is due to be sold next month and that will settle the fate of some of the networks still operating services in areas where licenses were cancelled.
