Three UK Confirms It Wont Charge a Premium for LTE Services

Published on:

UK based Three has announced that if/when it secures an LTE license in the ongoing spectrum auction, then it will not be charging a premium for the 4G service.

The announcement is in contrast to rival network EE which has already launched LTE over its existing 1800Mhz spectrum, but has separate tariffs and charges on average an extra £5 per month for the service.

The UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom is currently in the middle of auctioning off radio spectrum specific for LTE services. Although the regulator wont comment during the auction, by making its announcement today, Three may be making a strategic play by seeking to discourage other bidders from paying too much in expectation of charging a premium for their LTE services.

"We don't want to limit Ultrafast services to a select few based on a premium price and we've decided our customers will get this service as standard." Three UK chief executive Dave Dyson said in the company statement..

Three's network, currently supported by DC-HSDPA technology, already covers 55% of the UK population with an initial focus on 50 towns and cities. It will reach 80% population coverage by the end of March and in the second half of this year it will incorporate 1800Mhz spectrum recently acquired by Three to add even more coverage and capacity.
