Deutsche Telekom Close to Buying Stake in Wi-Fi Operator, Fon

Published on:

Germany's Deutsche Telekom is reportedly in talks to buy a stake in the Spanish Wi-Fi hotspot operator Fon. Citing persons familiar with the negotiations, the Wall Street Journal said that the two companies have already signed a letter of intent for the deal.

Fon does not operate its own Wi-Fi hotspots, but developed a system that allows other Wi-Fi users to share their internet connection with other Fon users. The system is particularly good at improving Wi-Fi access in residential areas where commercial hotspots aren't available.

Commercial Wi-Fi hotspot providers can also share their service in exchange for a revenue share from paying customers who are not part of the Fon community.

The company has signed up a number of networks across Europe who promote the service to their customers, most significantly BT in the UK which automatically enables the service on its domestic ISP routers.
