Mobinil Faces Prosecution Over Misleading Adverts
Published on:
Egypt based mobile network operator, Mobinil has been referred to prosecutors by the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) after it was accused of running misleading adverts touting the quality of its network.
The head of the CPA, Atef Yaacoub said that Mobinil had published an advertisement last month in which it claimed that it led Egypt's mobile phone service providers in terms of data and voice service quality.
The figures were based on its own internal calculations - but the complaint is that the advert made it look as though the claim was based on calculations by the National Telecommunications Regulation Authority (NTRA).
The NTRA was forced to run its own adverts a few weeks later denying that it was the source of the data used by Mobinil.
Mobinil is majority owned by France Telecom and has around 30 million customers.
