First Submarine Cable to Link Taiwan and Mainland China

Published on:

The first undersea fiber-optic cable to create a direct link between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan has been completed, China Unicom has announced.

The 270-km cable runs between the capital of China's Fujian province, Fuzhou and the Taiwanese city of Danshuei.

The submarine cable will enhance cross-strait communication and free both sides from relying on international fiber-optic cables, said Chang Xiaobing, chairman of China Unicom.

The project was initiated by Chinese mainland telecoms companies China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, as well as the Taiwan-based ChungHwa Telecom, FarEasTone, Taiwan Mobile and Taiwan International Gateway Corporation.

Cable-laying work began last November.
