Thailand's AIS to Launch 3G Services by End of May

Thailand's AIS has outlined plans to invest US$435 million during the rest of this year, mainly on expanding its 3G network.
The company, which was granted a 3G license using the more usual 2.1Ghz spectrum late last year, expects to launch 3G services by May, the company's CEO, Wichain Mektrakarn said.
"We plan a commercial launch of our 3G 2.1-GHz service under the AIS 3G brand by May, with at least 3,000 base stations in Bangkok and 18 major provinces," he added.
The company then has license obligations to expand the network to 80% population coverage within four years. Huawei, ZTE and Nokia Siemens Networks are the current 3G infrastructure suppliers.
The company already has some 3G subscribers based on its 900Mhz spectrum, but will work to migrate them to the 2.1Ghz network and will promote upgrades to its existing 30 million GSM users.
