Tanzania Proposes Sharp Reduction in Mobile Termination Rates

Published on:

Tanzania's telecoms regulator, the TCRA has proposed a sharp reduction in the mobile termination rates from an average of TZS112 per minute to TZS 35 per minute.

The regulator said that the figure it proposed was based on a study of the market by UK based consultants, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and that a glide reduction would also come into effect after the next cut to eventually lower the termination rates to TSZ27 by 2018.

The mobile networks are calling for the rate to be reduced to around TZS 84 per minute this year, with the glide reduction then staggered in over the next few years. They appear to accept the eventual 2018 rate, but differ over the reduction to be applied in the first year.
