Uganda Wont Extend SIM Card Registration Deadline

Published on:

Uganda's telecoms regulator has said that it wont extend the deadline for prepay subscribers to register their SIM card ownership details with the mobile networks.

Customers have until the 1st March to take ID documents to the mobile networks or face having their SIM cards disconnected.

UCC spokesman Fred Otunnu, told The Independent that between 60-70 % of about 16 million SIM cards have been registered so far.

The regulator expects that 90-95% of SIM cards will be registered by the deadline, which fits in with other countries which have typically shrunk their recorded customer bases by 5-10% following SIM card registration processes.

Otunnu told the newspaper that although it is still early to say, UCC is most likely not to extend the deadline for registering the SIM cards.
