First Tizen-Based Smartphones to Go on Sale in Japan

The first Tizen based smartphone could be released this year, and go on sale in Japan, according to local media reports.
Without citing sources, the Yomiuri Shimbun said that NTT DOCoMo is working with Intel and Samsung -- both backers of the Tizen OS -- on at least one new smartphone based on the platform.
DoCoMo is also the only Japanese network not selling Apple's iPhone and is seen to be in need of something other than Android to rely on.
Tizen is a Linux based OS which has been promoted by the Linux Foundation as an alternative to the Android OS platform -- although the technical steering group is lead by Intel and Samsung. It evolved from the merger of Nokia's MeeGo and the LiMo platforms.
Network operators are known to be wary of the growing Android/Apple duopoly and were disappointed by the lack of success of initial Nokia/Windows based smartphones to create competition in the handset market.
The Japanese report added that the other mobile networks said to be interested in the Tizen based smartphone include Vodafone and France Telecom-Orange.
