Kenya Blocks All Unregistered SIM Cards
Published on:
Kenya's mobile networks have started blocking unregistered SIM cards after the telecoms regulator, the CCK refused to offer any further extensions to the registration deadline.
The regulator has in the past one month been running a media campaign calling on consumers to register their SIM cards including those used in tablets and internet modems.
As at December 28, 80.4% of the active mobile lines in the country had been registered. The number was, however, expected to increase going by the long queues witnessed at mobile operator's outlets.
"Those whose lines will be suspended will have only 90 days within which to register their lines. At the end of the 90 days the numbers will be permanently deactivated and re-assigned to new subscribers," said Mr. Mutua Muthusi, speaking on behalf of the CCK Director General.
Starting from the new year, no unregistered SIM cards will be activated on the local mobile networks.
