Japan's DoCoMo Loses Subscribers As Customers Migrate to iPhone Carrying Networks

Published on:

Japan's NTT DoCoMo has posted its first drop in subscriber numbers in over five years as it lost customers to its two rival networks.

The company said that it lost 40,800 customers in the month of November, which has been put down to the lure of Apple's latest smartphone, which is sold by the other two networks.

The two rival networks, Softbank Mobile and KDDI both increased their customer numbers by 301,900 and 228,800 respectively.

This is the first time that NTT DoCoMo has posted a decline in its subscriber base since August 2007. The company was particularly hurt by the loss of 212,100 customer migrating to other networks while retaining their phone number (MNP).

At the end of November, NTT DoCoMo had 60.8 million customers, compared to 36.6 million at KDDI and 31 million at Softbank Mobile.
