Pakistan's Mobilink has reportedly inked network upgrade contracts with Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei as part of a US$1 billion upgrade plan.

The upgrade, over an unspecified number of years will also prepare the network for the deployment of 3G services, when the regulator finally auctions off the licenses.

"The investment on our mobile network is a continuation of promise made at the start of 2012 to create a paradigm shift in Pakistan's cellular environment. Mobilink will sustain its focus on infrastructure investment, increased coverage and great customer relationship management to provide our valued customers with the best cellular experience in Pakistan," Jo Lunder, Group CEO of Mobilink's parent company, Vimpelcom said in a press release sent to The Nation newspaper.

The company says that it has invested US$3.9 billion on its network since it was set up in 1994.
